Well it's been weeks since I had time to post, so I will have to go back and fill in gaps of growth, and goals accomplished. It's been a good, happy busy, joyful, fun start to our summer. For for the sake of sleep and taking care of this family, and staying caught up, computer time was limited.
For baseball season for Joseph, and to some degree all of us, there was a lot of lessons in self discipline, courage, longevity, and hard work. It took both us parents to really make this a priority, but we helped Joseph overcome a real fear of the ball (moving from the tee to a pitched ball) and he really learned to hit the ball by learning to develop a good swing. Bill did an amazing job teaching this to him. We also did a lot of work fielding and improving skills in throwing. Bill taught me how to throw all over again (lest I pass along poor form). I'm afraid I still need work, or as Bill says shoulder surgery. (That's what you get being married to someone who works in the OR). We both took extra time and worked with Joseph, me during the day/week, and Bill in the evenings when he could and on weekends. He has shared a real love of the game with Joseph, who appeared initially ambivalent about playing. Now after the past 8 weeks he loves to play baseball, and he loves to watch the Mariners with Dad on the laptop. Unfortunately they play late in the night, but they can re-watch the previous night's shows whenever they want. it's amazing to watch how well Joseph can understand the game from learning and watching with his Dad.
As far as the Indians West goes, Joseph's team went 15 games undefeated and won their division. Wow were we amazed. What was great was seeing the hard work pay off, and having Joseph help his team by the end with doubles and a triple, and some runs right when they needed it. One of the coaches told Bill how amazed he was at his improvement, he's never seen anyone improve so much in one season. The head coach really commended him for his hard work, and said undoubtedly he was most improved, and that he was impressed. That made Daddy proud, and watching Joseph's character stretch and learn through the hard work also made him proud. I guess if you have to live in the suburbs, the hard working sweat and tears lessons sometimes come through sports for boys rather than harvesting, or rounding up the cattle. I am pleased to see the value in this especially since there is no question of the demands for time and energy in participating in the league. Hooray for those Indians, and thank God for turning what was a bumpy season at times into a truly fun and rewarding experience. Now after enjoying a week off, we are about to enter extended season. Oh, my, the character building is being passed around the family.
